PhD position at SUPSI's CARES center to research patient and caregiver expertise in Swiss healthcare through qualitative and ethnographic methods.

The Center of Competence Care, Health and Society (CARES) at SUPSI is seeking a doctoral researcher to lead a study on how patient and informal caregiver knowledge is recognized and professionalized within and beyond Swiss healthcare institutions. The role involves managing a cancer-focused case study across the country, conducting fieldwork, and contributing to interdisciplinary dialogue on care practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all stages of the cancer case study, from gathering data through document reviews, ethnographic fieldwork, and interviews to managing datasets, performing qualitative analysis, and drafting the doctoral dissertation.
  • Share findings via internal meetings, academic conferences, peer-reviewed articles, and engagement with relevant stakeholders.
  • Work closely with project partners and team members to foster interdisciplinary exchange.
  • Handle administrative duties for the project with precision and dependability.
  • Engage in the academic community at CARES and the STS Lab at UNIL by attending seminars, workshops, and collaborative events.

Requirements

  • Hold a Master's degree in social sciences.
  • Demonstrate excellent proficiency in Italian, French, and English for both written and spoken communication; German knowledge is beneficial.
  • Show proven experience or a strong interest in qualitative and ethnographic methodologies, including data collection and analysis.
  • Have background or interest in healthcare practices, care work, lay and expert knowledge, health anthropology/sociology, or science and technology studies.
  • Display strong communication abilities, problem-solving aptitude, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Exhibit high motivation, intellectual curiosity, and a readiness to work in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Be flexible, enthusiastic, and proactive in contributing to the project and the scientific activities of CARES.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of German.
