CERN seeks an Entry Level Calorimeter Development Physicist in Geneva to advance radiation-hard Spaghetti Calorimeter technology for the LHCb PicoCal project. The role involves detector R&D, testing, and optimization within the Experimental Physics Department.
This position supports the strategic detector research and development programme within CERN's Experimental Physics Department. The successful candidate will focus on advancing radiation-hard Spaghetti Calorimeter technology, aiming to achieve picosecond-level time resolutions for the LHCb PicoCal experiment and other applications.
Responsibilities
- Participate in research and development activities to refine and enhance Spaghetti Calorimeter technology for the LHCb PicoCal experiment and related projects.
- Conduct laboratory and test-beam evaluations of prototype modules to improve time resolution performance.
- Support investigations into optimizing photon detectors for use with Spaghetti Calorimeter systems.
- Evaluate new radiation-hard, fast crystal scintillating fibers and organic scintillating materials.
- Prepare and publish scientific findings from the research work.
Requirements
- Demonstrated history of developing detectors for particle physics experiments.
- Hands-on experience testing calorimeter detectors in both laboratory settings and test-beam facilities.
- Must be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- Hold a Master's degree in Physics or a related field with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience, or a PhD with up to 3 years of post-graduation experience.
- Must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
- Fluent spoken and written English.

- Prior experience characterizing photon detectors and/or scintillators.
- Background in simulating optical calorimeter technologies.
