PhD Position in NCCR Genesis: On the rise of molecular complexity at the Origin of Life

ETH Zurich · Zürich

ETH Zurich seeks a PhD candidate for the NCCR Genesis project to study how molecular complexity arises from simple building blocks, focusing on peptide amyloids and their interactions with RNA and membranes.

This position is embedded within the National Centre of Competence in Research NCCR Genesis, an SNSF-funded initiative dedicated to understanding how life emerges in the Universe. The successful candidate will explore the transition from basic chemical components to self-replicating systems, with a specific emphasis on peptide amyloids and their relationships with RNA and cellular membranes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research into how molecular complexity develops from simple precursors into self-replicating chemical networks.
  • Analyze the behavior and interactions of peptide amyloids with RNA and lipid membranes.
  • Utilize advanced laboratory equipment and experimental setups for high-quality scientific inquiry.
  • Enhance professional competencies in critical analysis, data interpretation, problem-solving, and project coordination.
  • Disseminate findings through publications in top-tier scientific journals and presentations at global conferences.

Requirements

  • Hold a Master's degree with a robust foundation in experimental chemistry.
  • Demonstrate experience in physical and/or organic chemistry.
  • Exhibit fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Show strong interpersonal and social abilities suitable for collaborative research environments.
