PHD position on Atomic-Scale Structure–Function Relationships in Separation Materials for Sustainable Processes

ETH Zurich seeks a PhD candidate to investigate atomic-scale structure–function relationships in separation materials for CO₂ capture and critical metal recovery.

This position focuses on linking atomic-level mechanisms to the separation performance of materials used for CO₂ capture and the extraction of valuable elements like lithium and cobalt from waste. The role aims to establish fundamental insights into how atomic structure influences selectivity, capacity, and stability, ultimately deriving rational design principles for improved materials.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate the creation of model materials with advanced structural and spectroscopic analysis, prioritizing X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray total scattering with pair distribution function analysis, and vibrational spectroscopy.
  • Apply analytical methods to examine local coordination environments, electronic structure, and structural dynamics under operational conditions.

Requirements

  • Hold an outstanding MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrate strong motivation, creativity, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Show a genuine interest in atomic-scale mechanisms within separation materials.
  • Exhibit a high level of independence and self-organization.
  • Be willing to engage in an interdisciplinary and evolving research project.
  • Maintain flexibility for intensive experimental campaigns, including synchrotron beamtime.
