The Paul Scherrer Institute seeks a PhD candidate to develop low-energy electron holography for imaging 2D crystals and nano-scaled non-crystalline samples within the Nanodiffraction group.
This position is part of the Nanodiffraction group at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The successful candidate will focus on creating a new imaging method known as low-energy electron holography. This technique will be used to visualize two-dimensional crystals and non-crystalline materials at the nanoscale.
Responsibilities
- Preparing samples for analysis
- Capturing low-energy electron holograms
- Reconstructing sample structures numerically from the recorded holograms
- Simulating low-energy electron holograms for different sample types
- Publishing research findings and presenting results at scientific conferences
Requirements
- A recently completed master's degree in physics or engineering
- Strong understanding of solid-state physics, coherent optics, and theoretical physics, including quantum mechanics and QED
- Proficiency in programming with MATLAB and Python
Nice to have
- Practical experience in experimental physics, with a preference for those who have built devices
- Background in electron microscopy or light optical imaging
