PhD. Student position in Integrated photonic-spintronic devices

EPFL · Lausanne

EPFL seeks a PhD candidate to develop compact terahertz radiation sources and millimeterwave oscillators for integrated photonic circuits within a Swiss-French collaborative project.

The Hybrid Photonics Laboratory at EPFL is looking for a researcher to join their team focused on integrated photonics. The position involves creating high-quality electronic signals at frequencies exceeding 100 GHz. This role is part of a joint initiative with IEMN Lille and aims to advance compact, efficient terahertz radiation sources ranging from 100 GHz to 10 THz. The successful applicant will help shape the future of photonics-based millimeterwave-optical technology in a dynamic research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design miniaturized millimeterwave and terahertz oscillators, integrate them into photonic circuits, and develop the associated driving software and hardware.
  • Automate measurement procedures to streamline experimental workflows.
  • Simulate optical and millimeterwave/terahertz properties using tools like COMSOL or CST.
  • Conduct laboratory characterization of samples.
  • Model experimental data from first principles using Python or Matlab.
  • Publish scientific findings, file patents, and present research at national and international conferences.
  • Maintain collaborations with partner institutions and submit periodic progress reports.

Requirements

  • Hold a background in physics with a strong interest in high-frequency electronics, integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, metrology, and/or electro-optic transduction.
  • Demonstrate a hands-on attitude and a willingness to take on new challenges.
  • Possess knowledge of or interest in learning Python, Matlab, Labview, Inventor, Illustrator, CST Microwave Studio, and COMSOL.

Nice to have

  • Previous experience in relevant fields is advantageous but not required.
  • Enjoy tackling difficult problems and solving them step by step.
  • Appreciate collaborating with various scientific groups and taking on a leading junior role in international teams.

What the company offers

  • Contribute to entirely new avenues in quantum photonics within a young and dynamic team.
  • Access excellent infrastructure, including the EPFL cleanroom, the Lausanne center for ultrafast science, and the Quantum Science Center at EPFL.
  • Receive a competitive salary, coverage of conference costs, and be part of a dynamic and inspiring scientific community.
