Ph.D. position in Microcombs for atomic clocks

EPFL · Lausanne

EPFL seeks a Ph.D. candidate to develop microcomb-based optical frequency combs for quantum optical clocks within a European QUANTERA consortium.

This position contributes to a European research initiative focused on creating a butterfly-packaged, soliton-based optical frequency comb device. The successful candidate will help stabilize this device using thin-film lithium niobate and integrate it with a two-photon rubidium quantum optical clock.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build miniaturized frequency converters for microcombs, including associated control software and hardware, while automating measurement workflows.
  • Run optical property simulations using tools like COMSOL or CST.
  • Perform laboratory characterization of samples.
  • Analyze experimental data from first principles using Python or Matlab.
  • Publish findings in scientific journals, file patents, and present results at conferences.
  • Maintain project collaborations and submit regular progress reports.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Physics or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated interest in high-frequency electronics, integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, metrology, or electro-optic transduction.
  • A proactive approach with a willingness to tackle novel challenges.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with Python, Matlab, Labview, Inventor, Illustrator, CST Microwave Studio, or Comsol, or a strong desire to learn these tools.
  • A preference for breaking down complex problems into manageable steps.
  • Experience working with diverse scientific groups and taking on junior leadership roles in international teams.

What the company offers

  • Join a young, dynamic team to explore new frontiers in quantum photonics.
  • Access to top-tier facilities, including EPFL's cleanroom, the Lausanne center for ultrafast science, and the Quantum Science Center.
  • A competitive salary, conference funding, and an inspiring scientific environment.
