Bachem seeks a Mid-level Automation Engineer to manage its Digital Manufacturing and Data Lab in Bubendorf, Switzerland, focusing on Siemens PCS7 systems, digital twins, and IT/OT infrastructure.

This position serves as a central technical hub for the company’s Digital Manufacturing and Data Lab. The engineer bridges the gap between automation hardware and IT systems, enabling experimentation, prototyping, and the scaling of digital solutions across TechOps and manufacturing divisions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain the lab’s IT/OT infrastructure, including network configurations, virtualized environments, and automation hardware.
  • Configure and support Siemens PCS7 ecosystems, including WinCC and Simatic Batch, for pilot and laboratory settings.
  • Develop simulation models and digital twins using SIMIT to facilitate virtual commissioning, testing, and training.
  • Integrate controllers, field devices, and laboratory equipment into cohesive data and automation networks.
  • Create and maintain internal tools, templates, and automation libraries to support lab users.
  • Assist engineers and data scientists with system usage, troubleshooting, and experimental setup.
  • Contribute to digitalization projects from initial requirement analysis through to prototyping and implementation.
  • Manage system documentation, configuration control, and testing protocols.
  • Identify and introduce new technologies and best practices to enhance the lab environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Practical experience with process control systems, particularly Siemens PCS7, WinCC, and Simatic Batch.
  • Familiarity with simulation platforms such as SIMIT or equivalent tools.
  • Strong knowledge of automation hardware, PLCs, field instrumentation, and industrial communication protocols like OPC UA, Profinet, and Modbus.
  • Competence in IT/OT infrastructure management, including virtualization (VMware, Proxmox), Windows administration, and TCP/IP networking.
  • Understanding of data systems (historians, MES) and their integration with automation, including experience with digital twin concepts.
