The International Organization for Migration seeks a Senior UI/UX Consultant to enhance the usability and design of its Drupal-based Displacement Tracking Matrix portal in Geneva.
This consultancy role is dedicated to refining the user experience of a critical humanitarian data portal managed by the Department of Humanitarian Response and Recovery. The consultant will lead efforts to improve navigation, visual design, and search functionality, ensuring the platform effectively serves its users through evidence-based design decisions.
Responsibilities
- Audit the current Drupal site architecture, including content types, navigation structures, and search capabilities.
- Pinpoint usability barriers, accessibility gaps, and friction points in content discovery.
- Engage with stakeholders through interviews, workshops, and surveys to gather user insights.
- Define user needs and identify specific areas for interface improvement.
- Recommend structural changes to navigation, content hierarchy, and user journeys.
- Create wireframes that map out key user flows and template layouts.
- Design modular page components optimized for Drupal implementation.
- Develop intuitive search interfaces featuring faceted filters, sorting options, and clear result listings.
- Produce low-fidelity and high-fidelity mockups using tools like Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch.
- Ensure all designs are responsive and functional across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
- Build a comprehensive design system or UI kit covering typography, color palettes, and reusable components.
- Deliver detailed design specifications and assets to development teams for accurate implementation.
- Review final implemented pages to ensure design fidelity before project sign-off.
Requirements
- At least five years of professional experience in UI/UX design.
- Proven track record of designing websites or portals built on the Drupal platform.
- Experience creating interfaces for advanced search, faceted filtering, or data discovery.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive design handover packages for developers.
- Strong understanding of component-based design structures within CMS environments.
- Familiarity with Drupal-specific features such as Views, Paragraphs, Layout Builder, taxonomies, and fields.
- Solid knowledge of responsive web design and mobile-first methodologies.
- Understanding of accessibility standards, particularly WCAG 2.1 or newer versions.
- Skill in designing SEO-optimized interfaces with logical content hierarchy.
- Proficiency in industry-standard design software including Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch.
- Capacity to balance user requirements with technical constraints to create implementable designs.
- Fluent command of English, both written and spoken.
Nice to have
- A Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience Design, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of additional United Nations official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
