The company seeks a senior veterinary professional to lead its Veterinary Medicine group in Basel, ensuring high-quality animal care, supporting research, and managing quality assurance for laboratory animal colonies.

This position involves leading the Veterinary Medicine team to provide comprehensive care for laboratory animals, including clinical monitoring, treatment, and health management. The role also supports research groups with in-vivo experimental work and contributes to global and onsite strategies for veterinary medicine and care management.

Responsibilities

  • Implement routine preventive measures, diagnostic testing, and therapeutic interventions for animal health issues, including herd treatments and 24/7 emergency response.
  • Conduct microbiological monitoring of animal populations, manage ad hoc testing, and coordinate investigations for suspected diseases or hygiene breaches, including quarantine protocols.
  • Oversee the triage of animal imports and support export processes.
  • Manage prescription and non-prescription drugs in compliance with legal standards across all in-vivo laboratories.
  • Provide expert advice to research teams on veterinary medicine, lab animal science, microbiology, surgery, and anesthesia, including input on new disease models.
  • Coordinate quality assurance activities within the care management department.
  • Manage the CM vivarium share point site and develop guidance documents for in-vivo labs.
  • Prepare for and attend AAALAC site visits and other regulatory inspections.
  • Collaborate on and implement care management projects, including 3R's initiatives, both locally and globally.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and train care management staff.

Requirements

  • A veterinary degree recognized in Switzerland, plus at least five years of post-graduate experience in relevant fields.
  • Eligibility for a cantonal veterinary practice license and a retail business license for drug dispensing.
  • Proven experience in laboratory animal science and microbiology, including hygiene monitoring.
  • Hands-on experience with small animal (rodent) medicine, including surgery and anesthesia.
  • Experience in experimental in-vivo work with rodents, including surgical and anesthetic procedures.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in environments with potential health risks, such as zoonoses or allergies, and to use personal protective equipment.
  • Fluency in German and English.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with Swiss federal, cantonal, and local animal welfare legislation.
  • ECLAM certification is preferred.
