Medical Device Platform Design Engineer

Roche seeks a Mid-level Medical Device Platform Design Engineer in Basel to lead mechanical design and reliability engineering for autoinjector and drug delivery platforms.

This position supports the medical device platform team in developing innovative drug delivery systems for Roche’s therapeutic, eye care, and incretin portfolios. The engineer focuses on the design and maintenance of Autoinjector and PFS-Needle Safety Device platforms for combination products.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the technical expert for product design, assisting development and sustaining engineering teams across the product lifecycle.
• Apply mechanical engineering principles from initial concept generation through engineering analysis and platform technology design.
• Collaborate with external suppliers and partners to oversee the mechanical design of components and subassemblies.
• Conduct reliability assessments, including edge-of-failure testing, variance management, tolerance sensitivity analysis, and the creation of CAE models and digital twins.
• Identify and resolve complex functional and assembly challenges related to Autoinjector and PFS-NSD combination products.
• Direct technical investigations internally and at third-party manufacturers to address device and assembly issues efficiently.
• Lead the documentation of product and customer requirements, design reviews, risk assessments, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a comparable technical field.
• Deep understanding of prefilled syringes, Autoinjectors, PFS-Needle Safety Devices, and novel drug delivery design and manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of materials science relevant to drug delivery systems, including damage mechanisms, common defects, and performance testing.
• Proficiency with system modeling tools such as Digital Twins, CAE, FEA, and MiniTab, along with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
• Demonstrated history of technical leadership and problem-solving within regulated environments.
