SHL Medical seeks a Design Engineer for Platform Development in Zug, CH. The role focuses on mechanical design of autoinjector platforms, requiring CAD expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and knowledge of Six Sigma and Systems Engineering.
This position supports the design activities for one of SHL Medical's autoinjector product platforms. The engineer will apply mechanical design principles and modern methodologies to translate market and regulatory demands into practical, high-quality solutions. The role demands effective collaboration within cross-functional teams to ensure scalability, innovation, and adherence to quality standards throughout the product lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute device design tasks for a designated platform, including refining architecture, defining engineering requirements, creating 3D/2D models, and assessing functionality, manufacturability, sustainability, and cost.
- Conduct performance analysis and plan risk-based design assessments to ensure all product requirements are met.
- Document and communicate findings through technical memos, reports, and presentations.
- Analyze market and stakeholder feedback to identify risks and opportunities for improving device functionality, reliability, safety, cost, sustainability, and manufacturing scalability.
- Assist with device technology and patent landscaping evaluations, offering design recommendations and revision plans.
- Manage platform updates via rigorous change control processes, including risk assessments and necessary verifications and validations.
- Support Non-Conformance Material Reports (NCMRs) from production and conduct root cause analysis extending beyond the platform's design scope.
- Collaborate closely with Subject Matter Experts in Human Factors, Regulatory, Engineering, Manufacturing, Testing, Quality Engineering, and Regulatory Compliance.
Requirements
- Minimum of one year of experience with injection molding-based products in the medical or a similarly regulated industry, or two to three years in a related role within a less regulated sector.
- Proficiency in CAD software (Solidworks or equivalent), simulation tools, and statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems creatively using a structured, requirements-driven approach.
- Openness to learning and applying modern design excellence methods, including Six Sigma and Systems Engineering concepts.
- Strong collaboration skills to work with designers and cross-functional teams on complex design solutions.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a comparable field.
- Fluent English communication skills.
Nice to have
- Effective communication skills, including open-mindedness, initiative, constructive thinking, persistence, and results-orientation, with the ability to present technical information clearly under pressure.
- Prior experience working in a regulated environment.
- Background in designing and developing medical devices from early concept to launch, preferably within drug delivery.
- Proven application of platform design and systems engineering concepts to medical device mechanical design.
- Ability to identify design risks early and develop proactive mitigation plans.
- Experience with DFx (Design for Testing, Manufacturing, Assembly, Quality, Cost, Sustainability) and a commitment to optimizing designs for all stakeholder needs.
