ETH Zurich offers a 4-year full-time PhD position in light-controlled variable stiffness for soft robotics, funded by an ERC Starting Grant. The role involves developing light-programmable materials and soft robotic systems for reconfigurable applications, with opportunities for teaching and supervision.

This PhD position focuses on creating light-programmable stiffness for reconfigurable soft devices and robots, supported by an ERC Starting Grant. The goal is to develop materials and systems that can dynamically change stiffness and shape for real-world applications in robotics and biomedicine.

Responsibilities

  • Develop methods to control material stiffness using light, aiming for high stiffness contrast, fast switching times under one second, and compact size at the millimeter scale.
  • Conduct characterization and build theoretical models using multiphysics simulation.
  • Design, fabricate, and test an active soft robotic surface capable of changing shape and texture for camouflage applications.
  • Create and build reconfigurable soft robotic actuators that can adjust their actuation mode and force in real time.
  • Demonstrate applications in robotics or biomedical devices through collaborative projects.
  • Supervise master’s and bachelor’s students in research projects.
  • Serve as a teaching assistant for the robotic materials course.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from a top-tier university.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.

Nice to have

  • Prior research experience in soft robotics, smart materials, or variable stiffness materials is highly advantageous.
