PostDoc in Urban Planning 80-100% (f/m/d)

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) seeks a PostDoc to join the UNSEAL project, focusing on urban planning strategies to reverse soil sealing and enhance urban biodiversity across Europe.

This position is based within the Land Change Science research unit at WSL and is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) under the «UNSEAL» project. The role aims to investigate how urban planning in European cities can effectively engage stakeholders to transform paved areas into vibrant green spaces, thereby improving urban biodiversity and supporting nature-based solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct case studies to compare various urban planning contexts across Europe.
  • Identify successful initiatives and the specific planning instruments, models, or approaches that facilitate the reversal of soil sealing.
  • Share project results with the scientific community, urban planning professionals, and the general public.
  • Work closely with international partners to expand the impact of findings and co-author publications.

Requirements

  • A PhD in spatial planning, governance, or a closely related discipline.
  • Solid understanding of European planning systems.
  • Proven experience in planning and policy analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in methods such as document analysis and semi-structured interviews.
  • Strong organizational and communication capabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Fluency in English.

Nice to have

  • Experience collaborating in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Working knowledge of German, Hungarian, Greek, Romanian, or Dutch, corresponding to the case study countries.
