CERN seeks a Safety Engineer for the CMS Experiment in Geneva to oversee safety systems during Long Shutdown 3. The role requires expertise in fire protection, risk assessment, and commissioning within a multicultural environment.

This position places the candidate within the CMS Safety Office, focusing on safety-related activities at the CMS experimental sites during the Long Shutdown 3 period. The role is critical for managing major upgrades to both the detector and its supporting infrastructure, ensuring that all safety protocols are rigorously applied during these complex technical changes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical evaluation of CMS fire extinguishing and safety monitoring systems.
  • Review, test, and commission the CMS Alarm Action Matrix.
  • Organize regular system reviews and guide risk assessment processes.
  • Supervise the installation, integration, and commissioning of safety-related infrastructure.
  • Manage the assembly, deployment, and commissioning of the environmental monitoring system.
  • Oversee the technical review, maintenance, and follow-up of fire protection systems.
  • Define, test, and validate safety system logic.
  • Collaborate with CMS Technical Coordination and subdetector teams to ensure coherent safety implementation.
  • Support the preparation and tracking of safety deliverables to ensure traceability.
  • Participate in activity reviews and guide related risk assessments.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in the safety framework and streamline processes.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Health, Safety and Environment Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with fire protection systems or environmental monitoring systems.
  • Extensive experience in installation, integration, and commissioning of safety-related technical systems.
  • Experience in field-supervision, including installation follow-up, testing, and commissioning of complex systems.
  • Track record in activity safety supervision, risk assessment, and coordination of multiple stakeholders.
  • Initial experience working with control and/or safety systems.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and standards in an international environment.
  • Ability to work successfully within multinational and multicultural teams.
  • Spoken and written proficiency in both English and French.
  • Valid driving licence.
  • Medical clearance before contract offer confirmation due to occupational health risks.

Nice to have

  • Certificates in Safety Management (e.g. Nebosh).
