Johnson & Johnson seeks a Senior Packaging Development Manager in Zuchwil to lead packaging technology design and commercialization for Trauma and Extremities products, ensuring compliance, cost efficiency, and team excellence.
This position serves as a pivotal leadership role within the Trauma and Extremities Technical Operations team. The incumbent will guide the end-to-end packaging lifecycle, from initial design through to commercialization, while shaping product strategy and cost roadmaps. The primary objective is to build a high-performing team that delivers innovative packaging solutions meeting quality, regulatory, and customer satisfaction goals.
Responsibilities
- Manage, mentor, and develop a group of experienced packaging engineers and project managers.
- Oversee the complete packaging lifecycle, including design, development, and launch activities for new products until their discontinuation.
- Define and implement an enterprise-wide packaging strategy in close collaboration with R&D, Commercial, Operations, Regulatory, Quality, and other key stakeholders.
- Foster technical growth within the team and maintain strong partnerships with internal functions to ensure successful device packaging development, testing, validation, and market release.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying, prioritizing, and executing packaging optimization projects.
- Manage third-party supplier relationships to ensure packaging validations are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in full compliance with quality standards.
- Verify that packaging technologies for existing products adhere to or surpass internal DePuy Synthes guidelines and external regulatory, quality, and environmental requirements.
- Monitor departmental and project budgets, ensuring capital and operational expenditures remain within approved targets.
Requirements
- Eight to ten years of professional experience in packaging, engineering, quality assurance, operations, or supply chain management.
- Proven capability to lead and facilitate transformative changes across multiple departments using innovative approaches.
- Ability to manage and support several project teams concurrently.
- Solid understanding of statistical analysis methods.
- Competent proficiency in Microsoft Office software suite.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in the medical device sector or other highly regulated industries.
- Background in package engineering, including supplier selection and management.
- Previous direct experience in people management.
- Familiarity with Business Excellence frameworks and Project Management methodologies.
- Knowledge of sterile packaging materials, their characteristics, and validation protocols.
- Experience in process development, including writing and executing validation documents.
- Understanding of ISO 13485, ISO 11607, ISTA, and ASTM standards as applied to medical devices.
- Strong financial skills, including capital purchase analysis, manufacturing and component cost estimation, and NPV/IRR calculation support for investment decisions.
