Senior Specialist Data Science, AI & Quantum

Novartis Pharma Schweiz AG seeks a Senior Specialist in Data Science, AI & Quantum to drive quantum computing strategy and applications in drug discovery within a hybrid role based in Basel.

This position is dedicated to exploring how quantum computing can accelerate drug discovery and development. The specialist will evaluate emerging quantum methods, define strategic directions for biomedical research, and serve as a key connector for quantum initiatives across various disease and functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Pinpoint valuable use cases for quantum computing within the drug discovery and development pipeline.
• Compare quantum and hybrid techniques with traditional computational approaches to assess their effectiveness.
• Create and conduct rigorous proof-of-concept experiments to validate quantum applications.
• Utilize quantum algorithms for molecular simulations, optimization tasks, and generative design.
• Analyze the current maturity, constraints, and real-world applicability of quantum technologies.
• Convert intricate quantum concepts into actionable scientific hypotheses and practical use cases.
• Help shape the overall quantum computing strategy for Biomedical Research.
• Partner with engineering and platform groups to build reusable workflows and assets.
• Serve as the primary contact for quantum projects spanning different disease and functional areas.
• Champion scientific rigor, reproducibility, and transparency in all computational research efforts.

Requirements

• A doctoral degree or equivalent professional experience in quantum computing, physics, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
• Deep knowledge of quantum algorithms, simulation techniques, and hybrid quantum-classical methodologies.
• Proven track record of applying advanced computational or machine learning techniques to scientific or biomedical challenges.
• Understanding of drug discovery areas like molecular simulation, protein modeling, or pharmacokinetics.
• Hands-on experience with quantum platforms such as Qiskit, Pennylane, Cirq, or comparable tools.
• Ability to design and assess proof-of-concept studies with a strong emphasis on scientific rigor and reproducibility.
• Skill in translating complex technical ideas into clear scientific insights and decision-making frameworks.
• Excellent collaboration and communication abilities to work effectively with multidisciplinary and external stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience working with academic or industry partners in the emerging quantum computing ecosystem.
• Familiarity with scaling computational solutions using cloud or high-performance computing environments.
