The Paul Scherrer Institut seeks a student to support the design and refinement of plasma-based beam manipulation tools, particularly Active Plasma Lenses. The position centers on computational modeling, offering two distinct simulation tracks based on the candidate's background, and may evolve into a Master's thesis for exceptional performers.
Responsibilities
- Assist in designing and refining plasma-based beam manipulation equipment, with a specific emphasis on Active Plasma Lenses.
- Execute multiphysics modeling tasks, such as CFD analysis for gas distribution optimization, acoustic studies for transverse density control, and potential plasma arc formation simulations.
- Build or adapt a Particle In Cell simulation environment using established codes like FBPIC, Smilei, or WarpX to analyze and reduce beam-plasma wakefield interactions.
- Run systematic parameter variations to determine ideal settings for maintaining beam quality.
- Support the construction of experimental plasma discharge setups or join measurement campaigns.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in physics, engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Must be in the final year of an undergraduate program, having completed at least four semesters.
- Demonstrated experience with CAD and CFD tools for multiphysics work.
- Strong Python skills and knowledge of GPU-accelerated numerical methods for PIC simulations.
- Solid foundation in computational physics and data analysis techniques.
- Must not have already finished a Master's thesis.
