The Paul Scherrer Institut seeks an intern to join its Synthesis & Processing Platform for experimental work on inorganic oxide materials, covering synthesis, processing, and characterization.
This internship places the candidate within the Laboratory for Energy Technologies & Innovation, specifically in the Synthesis & Processing Platform. The position focuses on the production and analysis of inorganic oxide-based materials through experimental methods. It offers a comprehensive look at the ceramic processing chain and material science, allowing the intern to engage with industrial-scale projects in an international research setting.
Responsibilities
- Create inorganic oxide materials using specialized tools, including Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) reactors.
- Manage the entire processing workflow, which involves wet chemistry, powder handling, mixing, drying, and pressing pellets.
- Conduct thermal treatments to verify material stability and ensure phase purity.
- Carry out structural and morphological analyses using XRD, SEM, and BET techniques.
- Keep accurate records of all experimental procedures and findings.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in Materials Science, Inorganic Chemistry, Ceramic Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Be in the final year of an undergraduate degree, having completed at least four semesters.
- Possess background knowledge in solid-state chemistry and inorganic synthesis.
- Have foundational experience in wet chemistry or ceramic processing.
- Demonstrate an analytical approach and familiarity with materials characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, and BET.
- Not have yet finished a Master’s thesis.
- Be proficient in English to handle documentation and international collaboration.
- Show a strong commitment to laboratory safety protocols.
Nice to have
- Prior exposure to pelletizing, shaping, or sol-gel chemistry.
