The Paul Scherrer Institute seeks a PhD candidate to research superheavy element chemistry, focusing on developing new radiochemical methods and analyzing experimental data at international facilities.

Within the Heavy Elements group at the Paul Scherrer Institute, this position focuses on the chemistry of the heaviest members of the periodic table. The role involves investigating atoms that exist for only fractions of a second, studying them individually to understand how physicochemical properties evolve at the limits of the table.

Responsibilities

  • Create novel radiochemical techniques and equipment for superheavy element studies
  • Generate radioisotopes of lighter homologs using PSI's large-scale infrastructure to validate and refine experimental concepts
  • Conduct advanced chemical experiments on superheavy elements at major accelerator sites globally through international partnerships
  • Process and interpret data to establish thermochemical characteristics of the heaviest elements
  • Share findings at global conferences and publish outcomes in top-tier peer-reviewed scientific journals

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Chemistry, with a preference for Physical Chemistry
  • Demonstrated ability in analytical thinking and problem-solving
  • Strong teamwork capabilities and proficiency in written and spoken English

Nice to have

  • Master's degree in Physics
  • Previous experience or knowledge in radiochemistry
