The Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen PSI, CH is seeking a full-time, on-site PhD Student in Radiochemistry to develop new methods for studying superheavy elements and conduct international research collaborations.

This position focuses on advancing radiochemical techniques and instrumentation for the investigation of superheavy elements. The successful candidate will utilize PSI's extensive research infrastructure to produce radioisotopes and conduct chemical experiments at major accelerator facilities globally. The role also entails analyzing experimental data to understand the thermochemical properties of the heaviest elements and sharing findings through publications and conference presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Create novel radiochemical procedures and equipment for superheavy element research.
  • Generate radioisotopes of lighter superheavy element homologs using PSI's large-scale facilities to refine experimental concepts.
  • Execute cutting-edge chemical experiments on superheavy elements at premier accelerator sites worldwide through international partnerships.
  • Evaluate and interpret experimental results to establish the thermochemical characteristics of the heaviest elements.
  • Share research outcomes at global conferences and publish findings in top-tier peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Chemistry, with a preference for Physical Chemistry; Physics graduates are also welcome to apply.
  • Demonstrated motivation, curiosity, and a strong desire to learn.
  • Deep interest in experimental research and the creation of new methods and tools.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate fluently in written and spoken English.

Nice to have

  • Previous experience or knowledge in radiochemistry is beneficial but not mandatory.
