The Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, is seeking a full-time PhD student to conduct aerosol chemistry research, including ^14C and mass spectrometer analyses, while completing a doctoral thesis at ETH Zurich.
This position focuses on analyzing aerosol samples from eastern Europe and Asia to understand organic and elemental carbon sources. The successful candidate will develop new analytical workflows and contribute to high-impact scientific publications while pursuing a PhD at ETH Zurich.
Responsibilities
- Analyze filter samples using ^14C and aerosol mass spectrometry techniques across regions in eastern Europe and Asia.
- Help create and refine methanol extraction procedures for aerosol mass spectrometer applications.
- Carry out source apportionment studies for organics and elemental carbon across various geographic areas.
- Execute offline measurements at both the PSI facility and the University of Bern.
- Publish research findings in prominent scientific journals.
- Draft and complete a doctoral thesis at ETH Zurich.
- Provide assistance to other laboratory projects as needed.
Requirements
- Hold a Master's degree in Atmospheric Science or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrate strong programming capabilities, particularly in Python, alongside robust data analysis skills.
- Possess excellent oral and written proficiency in English.
- Work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
