This position is part of a doctoral programme at the University of Bern, hosted by the Paul Scherrer Institut. The successful candidate will conduct laboratory research on clay materials, specifically focusing on proton mobility and diffusion, while working towards a PhD thesis.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and analyze clay samples and oriented films using techniques such as XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and electrochemical methods.
- Investigate proton mobility in clays via quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) at the SINQ facility and create tools for data analysis.
- Design and build an experimental setup for radiotracer diffusion in thin clay films, then perform tracer diffusion and electromigration experiments.
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Requirements
- Hold a Master's degree in physical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrate strong motivation for laboratory work and have prior experience in a chemical lab setting.
- Show eagerness to apply advanced data analysis tools, including Python programming.
- Possess excellent communication skills and effective time management abilities.
