The Paul Scherrer Institute seeks a PhD candidate to investigate proton mobility and diffusion in clay samples through neutron scattering and experimental setup development.
This four-year doctoral position, hosted by the Paul Scherrer Institute and linked to the University of Bern, focuses on multidisciplinary research into clay materials. The role involves collaboration between the Laboratory for Waste Management, the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging, and the Water Electrodynamics Group at TU-Hamburg to study proton mobility and develop new experimental methods.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and analyze clay samples and oriented films using techniques such as XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and electrochemical methods.
- Investigate proton mobility in clays via quasi-elastic neutron scattering at SINQ/PSI and create custom data analysis tools.
- Design and build an experimental setup for radiotracer diffusion in thin clay films, then perform tracer diffusion and electromigration studies.
- Present findings at conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and complete a doctoral thesis.
Requirements
- Hold a Master's degree in physical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrate strong motivation for laboratory work and possess prior experience in a chemical lab setting.
- Show excellent time management abilities and strong communication skills.
- Have excellent proficiency in English.
Nice to have
- Experience with spectroscopic techniques or molecular simulations.
- Ability to communicate in German.
What the company offers
- Systematic on-the-job training, personal development opportunities, and a strong culture of vocational education.
- Modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure designed to support work-life balance.
