AI Research Engineer (Pre-training - LLM & Multi-Modal)

The company is looking for a Senior AI Research Engineer to lead pre-training work on LLM and Multi-Modal models. This remote position in Zürich requires strong expertise in distributed training, PyTorch, and transformer architectures.

This position supports the AI model team in advancing the field through architectural innovation and performance improvements. The engineer will focus on scaling model capabilities, increasing efficiency, and integrating new functionalities into cutting-edge systems.

Responsibilities

• Execute foundational pre-training for Large Language Models and Multi-Modal systems on extensive distributed server clusters utilizing thousands of NVIDIA GPUs.
• Develop, test, and expand novel model architectures, tokenizers, and cross-modal alignment mechanisms to boost intelligence and understanding.
• Build and maintain high-throughput data pipelines by sourcing, filtering, and curating massive textual and multi-modal datasets.
• Run independent and team-based experiments to analyze outcomes and optimize training methods for better performance and token efficiency.
• Identify and resolve bottlenecks related to computational speed, model efficiency, and alignment stability during extended training periods.
• Help improve distributed training infrastructure to guarantee smooth scalability and hardware utilization on target platforms.

Requirements

• University degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline; a PhD in NLP or Machine Learning with strong A* conference publications is preferred.
• Proven experience executing large-scale pre-training runs for LLM or Multi-Modal models on distributed systems with thousands of NVIDIA GPUs.
• Practical knowledge of large-scale distributed training frameworks, libraries, and tools.
• Comprehensive understanding of modern transformer and non-transformer modifications designed to improve intelligence, efficiency, and scalability.
• Advanced proficiency in PyTorch and Hugging Face for model development, continual pretraining, and deployment.
