Entry-level technician role supporting mechanical installation and integration on the ATLAS detector at CERN in Geneva. The position involves hands-on assembly, machining, and logistical support during Long Shutdown 3.

This entry-level position assists senior staff with mechanical installation and integration tasks for the ATLAS detector and its surrounding infrastructure during the Long Shutdown 3 period. The role focuses on hands-on support within the experimental cavern environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with major detector movements and the construction of access platforms within the experimental cavern.
  • Help with sub-detector installation by managing the handling, transport, and precise positioning of components using lifting and alignment methods.
  • Organize workspaces, prepare necessary tooling, and provide logistical backing for detector maintenance interventions.
  • Review mechanical drawings, conduct basic dimensional inspections, and update supervising engineers on project progress.
  • Fabricate components and specialized tooling using standard machining processes like drilling, milling, and turning.

Requirements

  • Possess initial practical experience in mechanical assembly, fitting, or maintenance tasks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and 2D/3D CAD models.
  • Have initial experience with conventional machining techniques and general workshop practices.
  • Apply basic metrology skills using calipers, gauges, and dimensional inspection tools.
  • Maintain awareness of occupational health and safety principles in workshop and industrial settings.
  • Be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • Have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Hold a highest educational qualification of a general secondary education diploma.
  • Have never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract previously.
  • Hold a valid driving licence.
