The University Hospital Zurich seeks a mid-level Data Scientist for diagnostic molecular pathology in Zürich. The role focuses on analyzing omics data, developing bioinformatics pipelines, and supporting clinical diagnostics.

This position sits at the intersection of clinical science and data interpretation within a leading unit for precision medicine. The successful candidate will bridge the gap between raw molecular diagnostic data and clinical application, contributing to tumor genomics and multi-omics integration in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent analysis, quality control, and interpretation of NGS and multi-omics data for diagnostic purposes.
  • Design, validate, and deploy bioinformatics pipelines for routine molecular diagnostics.
  • Perform immunogenomics analyses with a focus on clinical relevance.
  • Apply machine learning and AI techniques to omics data, ensuring robustness and interpretability.
  • Translate new analytical methods into routine diagnostic workflows, including necessary documentation and validation.
  • Collaborate with pathologists and molecular biologists to prepare clinical reports.
  • Train medical and laboratory personnel in data interpretation and bioinformatics workflows.

Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Medical Informatics, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in NGS and omics data analysis within an applied setting.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, including Bioconductor.
  • Deep understanding of molecular biology and genetics, with the ability to interpret data in biological and clinical contexts.
  • Strong foundation in statistics and machine learning.
  • Experience with workflow management systems such as Nextflow or Snakemake, and containerization tools like Docker or Singularity.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of German is considered an advantage.
  • Experience in cancer genomics, immunogenomics, transcriptomics, epigenetics, metagenomics, or AI-based image analysis.
  • Background in data management, structured reporting, or integrative multi-omics.
  • Prior work experience in a clinical or medical environment.
