CERN seeks an Entry Level DevOps Engineer to support data management systems for the LHC. This permanent hybrid role in Geneva requires a recent graduate from a CERN Member State with Python and Linux expertise.
This position sits within the IT Storage and Data Management group (IT-SD), which provides essential services for storing, analyzing, and distributing data for the Large Hadron Collider and other experiments. The engineer will help meet the growing computing demands of the High-Luminosity LHC by connecting distributed data systems with remote supercomputers and next-generation AI infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Create integrations that enable large datasets to be accessed by European AI Factories and supercomputers.
- Design and test systems to ensure different data management platforms communicate effectively, guaranteeing transparent data access and policy-driven replication.
- Develop new functionality and contribute code, features, and bug fixes directly to the upstream Rucio project.
- Maintain infrastructure for EU projects, resolve incidents, and provide user support as part of the Operations team.
Requirements
- Proven experience in software development and integration using Python and scripting languages.
- Solid background in Linux system administration, configuration, and automation within bare-metal and Kubernetes container environments.
- Familiarity with Git and modern DevOps practices.
- Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- No more than two years of professional experience since graduation in Computing Engineering or a related field by the application deadline.
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant discipline.
- No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract history.
- Applicants without a university degree or with a PhD are not eligible.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of authentication mechanisms and secure data transfer protocols.
- Fluency in English or French, with a willingness to learn the basics of the other language.
