DevOps Engineer

ETH Zurich seeks a Mid-level DevOps Engineer in Lugano to design and operate software-defined infrastructure for scientific computing and AI/ML workloads. The role supports national and international initiatives, including the Swiss AI Initiative, within a fast-evolving AI landscape.

This role focuses on creating and managing infrastructure for advanced scientific computing and AI/ML applications at scale. It bridges systems and software engineering with cloud-native and high-performance computing, supporting researchers and engineers on complex scientific and AI projects. The position is part of CSCS’s key role in Switzerland’s AI ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and manage software-defined infrastructure for large-scale scientific computing and AI/ML workloads.
  • Support platforms used by researchers and engineers working on complex scientific and AI challenges.

Requirements

  • Experience in Linux systems engineering, scripting, troubleshooting, and software development (e.g., Python, Bash).
  • Hands-on experience with containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, GitOps, and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Helm, Ansible, and ArgoCD.
  • Understanding of distributed systems, APIs, scalability, observability, identity and access management, and security principles.
  • Experience with AI/ML platforms and the infrastructure that supports them.
  • Familiarity with HPC systems, GPU clusters, and large-scale computing environments.
  • Experience in platform engineering and tools that improve developer productivity.
  • Work experience in secure or confidentiality-sensitive operational settings.
  • Curious, practical, and driven to understand systems thoroughly.
  • Strong engineering mindset with a problem-solving approach.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Clear communicator and effective team player.

Nice to have

  • Experience supporting research or scientific computing environments.
  • Familiarity with HPC systems and services.
  • Exposure to GPU clusters and accelerated computing.
  • Experience with SRE practices or on-call operations.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux security.
  • Ability to use AI-assisted tools to enhance software development productivity.
