CERN seeks a Mid-level DevOps Engineer for its IT-CE group to support the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid and HL-LHC programme through automation, monitoring, and infrastructure management in Geneva.
This position sits within CERN’s IT Computing for Experiments group, specifically the CE-LCG section, where it supports the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. The role is critical to the High-Luminosity LHC programme, ensuring that global scientific collaborations have reliable data processing and transfer services. The engineer will operate within an international, multidisciplinary team alongside physicists and other computing specialists.
Responsibilities
- Build, integrate, and automate operational tools and workflows to support the High-Luminosity LHC.
- Act as a liaison for scientific collaborations, contributing directly to their computing projects and daily operations.
- Oversee and support a large-scale global distributed computing infrastructure spanning multiple international sites.
- Maintain and improve systems for monitoring, accounting, and topology to track service availability, data movement, and resource usage.
- Handle daily operational tasks such as incident tracking, debugging service issues, and coordinating with external sites and users.
- Adopt and integrate AI-driven tools and automation technologies to enhance operational efficiency and service reliability.
Requirements
- A Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent practical experience in Physics, Computing, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Hands-on experience working in Linux-based distributed computing environments.
- Strong proficiency in Python and other scripting languages.
- Familiarity with web frameworks and both relational and non-relational databases.
- Solid background in DevOps practices, including code management (Jira, GitLab), CI/CD pipelines, containerization, Kubernetes orchestration, and monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana.
- Experience managing large-scale systems, such as cloud or grid infrastructures.
- Fluent spoken and written English skills.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in computing for large scientific projects or working closely with scientific communities.
- A willingness and commitment to learn French.
