CERN seeks an Entry Level OpenStack Cloud Engineer in Geneva to operate and develop its large-scale scientific cloud infrastructure. This permanent hybrid role is open to nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States with up to two years of experience.
The successful candidate will join CERN's IT Cloud team to manage and enhance the OpenStack-based infrastructure that supports the majority of CERN and LHC experiment services. This position provides the opportunity to work on systems delivering compute, storage, and networking capabilities to thousands of users, offering hands-on experience with one of the world's largest scientific clouds.
Responsibilities
- Operate and contribute to the evolution of CERN's OpenStack cloud infrastructure.
- Develop and maintain automation tools and scripts using Python and configuration management systems.
- Collaborate with internal IT teams and user communities to design and integrate new cloud services.
- Participate in troubleshooting and optimizing the performance of large-scale distributed systems.
- Contribute bug fixes and improvements to the upstream OpenStack open-source community.
- Enhance service automation to ensure the scalability and manageability of cloud resources.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field (PhD applicants are not eligible).
- Have no more than two years of professional experience since graduation.
- Be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- Have never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract previously.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of the Linux operating system and experience administering Linux servers.
- Possess programming skills in Python for automation and systems tasks.
- Have experience with git version control.
- Communicate clearly in English, both spoken and written.
- Work effectively in a multidisciplinary, international team environment.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, virtualization technologies, or distributed systems.
- Experience with configuration management tools such as Puppet or Ansible.
- Knowledge of container technologies, CI/CD systems, or software-defined networking.
- Prior contributions to open-source projects or upstream communities.
- Understanding of networking concepts and storage technologies.
- Commitment to learning the French language.
