Bare Metal OpenStack Engineer (IT-CD-CLI-2026-179-GRAE)

CERN seeks an Entry Level Bare Metal OpenStack Engineer to manage cloud infrastructure and server lifecycle automation in Geneva. This permanent hybrid role is open to nationals of CERN Member States with up to two years of experience.

The successful candidate will join the IT Cloud team at CERN, focusing on the OpenStack-based infrastructure that supports major experiments like the LHC. The position sits at the intersection of systems engineering and software development, specifically targeting the lifecycle management of physical servers through OpenStack Ironic.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and enhance the OpenStack cloud infrastructure used by CERN IT.
  • Manage the bare metal server lifecycle using OpenStack Ironic, including integrating new hardware, provisioning nodes, and maintaining tools for testing and decommissioning.
  • Submit code contributions to the upstream OpenStack and Ironic projects.
  • Develop automation scripts and improve tooling using Python and configuration management systems.

Requirements

  • Proficient administration of Linux systems within server or data center environments.
  • Strong programming skills in Python for automation and systems tasks.
  • Deep understanding of the Linux operating system.
  • Experience using git for version control.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively in international, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • Maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree; PhD holders are not eligible.
  • Must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with configuration management tools like Puppet or Ansible.
  • Experience with bare metal server management, BMC protocols (IPMI, Redfish), or hardware provisioning workflows.
  • Prior contributions to open-source projects or upstream communities.
  • Commitment to learning French.
