CERN seeks an Entry Level Hardware Support Engineer to maintain server technologies in its openlab testbed and assist scientific users. This permanent, hybrid role in Geneva offers a tax-free stipend and comprehensive benefits.
This position sits within the Fabric and Communication Systems group, where the primary objective is to operate and support server technologies within the openlab heterogeneous architectures testbed. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting scientific communities by providing direct assistance to end-users.
Responsibilities
- Perform regular maintenance and upgrades to keep existing servers running at optimal performance levels.
- Troubleshoot and resolve system issues quickly to reduce downtime.
- Deploy and configure new server technologies within the openlab heterogeneous architectures testbed.
- Collaborate with industry partners and engage with emerging technologies.
- Plan and organize workshops focused on specific technical topics.
Requirements
- Solid background in computer systems, including BIOS/UEFI, x86/Arm processors, virtualization, memory, GPU computing, interconnects (Ethernet, Infiniband), and storage drives (S-ATA, SAS, NVMe).
- Hands-on experience with management and monitoring protocols like IPMI, Redfish, SMART, and SNMP.
- Strong proficiency in Linux operating systems and shell scripting.
- Proven experience using Python.
- Must be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- No more than two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree as the highest educational qualification.
- Must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
- A university degree is mandatory; applicants without one are ineligible.
- PhD holders are not eligible for this position.
Nice to have
- Experience with performance profiling and application optimization.
- Skills in performance-oriented debugging.
- Familiarity with software configuration management tools such as Puppet or Ansible.
- Ability to work in French.
