CERN seeks an Entry Level Hardware Support Engineer for its Fabric and Communication Systems group to maintain IT infrastructure and support computing clusters for research experiments.
This position sits within the Fabric and Communication Systems group, which handles the procurement, management, and operation of IT equipment for CERN experiments, data centres, and computing facilities. The role supports the development of advanced computing technologies for the global research community.
Responsibilities
- Maintain reliable infrastructure operations through regular maintenance and upgrades.
- Commission new systems, specifically contributing to the Next Generation Triggers project computing cluster.
- Conduct hardware evaluations and benchmarking while providing technical support to users.
- Deploy and operate systems featuring accelerator cards, including enterprise-grade GPUs.
- Organize and facilitate topic-focused workshops.
- Collaborate with industry partners and engage with emerging technologies.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional experience of no more than two years since graduation.
- Strong proficiency in Linux and shell scripting.
- Demonstrable experience with Python.
- Hands-on knowledge of computer systems, including BIOS/UEFI, x86/Arm architectures, virtualization, memory, GPU computing, interconnects (Ethernet, Infiniband), and storage drives (S-ATA, SAS, NVMe).
- Experience with management and monitoring protocols such as IPMI, Redfish, SMART, and SNMP.
- Fluent spoken and written English.
- A valid driving licence.
- No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with performance profiling and application optimization.
- Ability to perform performance-oriented debugging.
- Proficiency or willingness to learn software configuration management tools like Puppet or Ansible.
- Ability to work in French.
