Software Engineer - Back-End (Storage)

Proton seeks a Mid-level Back-End Software Engineer for its Storage team in Geneva. The role focuses on building scalable systems using C++, Go, Rust, or PHP within a hybrid work environment.

This position sits within the Storage Development team, which is tasked with creating and sustaining the software infrastructure for Proton's Storage realm. The team maintains Storage APIs and contributes to projects like Seaweed and Ceph, operating primarily on-premise infrastructure across several data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Guarantee the stability and performance of systems and their interactions with other components.
  • Design and build highly resilient, scalable solutions capable of supporting millions of users.
  • Work closely with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams and stakeholders to meet business and reliability standards.
  • Produce clear documentation regarding back-end capabilities and their correct application.
  • Develop technical designs and execute implementations to advance the platform.

Requirements

  • Extensive background in back-end development using C++, Go, Rust, or PHP.
  • Proven track record of constructing complex production-grade systems.
  • Familiarity with profiling methodologies and associated tools.
  • Ability to guide a team initiative from the initial discovery phase through to production deployment.
  • Strong grasp of security best practices.
  • Broad understanding of cryptography concepts.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience with storage systems such as Ceph, Seaweed, or Tape.
  • Operational background in SRE or on-call roles, showing capability to diagnose and resolve complex issues in critical systems.
