CERN seeks an Entry Level Backend Python Engineer in Geneva to modernize its scientific information platforms, focusing on Python backend services, OpenSearch, and open science initiatives.
The company is looking for a backend engineer to join the Tools and Services section of the Scientific Information Service. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain services that process millions of scientific records, ensuring they are accessible to a global audience. The position plays a key part in evolving the organization's content platform and driving its modernization.
Responsibilities
- Modernize the INSPIRE backend and develop services using the Model Context Protocol.
- Migrate data harvesting processes to Apache Airflow and retire legacy systems.
- Optimize ingestion and curation pipelines for scientific metadata and full-text content at scale.
- Expand Model Context Protocol services to provide curated scientific data to external AI applications.
- Enhance search and discovery features within the OpenSearch environment.
- Manage the migration of approximately 35,000 archival items to the Access to Memory (AtoM) service.
- Design, document, and deliver REST APIs for internal tools, partner institutes, and third-party systems.
- Implement automated testing, code reviews, monitoring, and CI/CD practices for containerized production deployments.
- Contribute project outputs to the open-source community to support Open Science goals.
Requirements
- Proven experience developing and operating backend services in Python within production environments.
- Strong proficiency with web frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI, along with relational and document databases.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement REST APIs.
- Practical knowledge of search engines like OpenSearch, including indexing and relevance tuning.
- Familiarity with containerized deployments, Git version control, and CI/CD workflows.
- Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- A Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field with 2–6 years of post-graduation experience, or a PhD with up to 3 years of post-graduation experience.
- No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract history.

- Experience contributing to open-source projects and working in collaborative engineering teams.
- A commitment to learning the French language.
