CERN seeks a Senior Computer Scientist to design and operate analysis facilities and virtual research environments, supporting open science and large-scale data infrastructures.
Positioned within the Collaborative Applications Group and Institutional Repositories section, this role drives the technical delivery of scientific computing services. The focus lies on building and coordinating open science platforms, including the EOSC CERN Node, to support research data, publications, and institutional knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the design, coding, and maintenance of analysis facilities that enable scalable and reproducible scientific workflows.
- Build Virtual Research Environments (VREs) that integrate data handling, workflow execution, software delivery, and analysis tools.
- Help manage federated scientific data infrastructures, including data lake models and distributed data access systems.
- Coordinate technical activities with open science communities, such as particle physics groups and external research infrastructures, while supporting the ESCAPE collaboration's technical coordination.
- Develop and maintain software components, service integrations, and automation tools for scientific computing, including cloud-native deployments.
- Advocate for common solutions and best practices across communities, contributing to competence centres, working groups, and collaborative technical forums.
- Work with research infrastructures and scientific domains (e.g., particle physics, astronomy) to translate requirements into robust computing solutions.
Requirements
- Master's Degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Software Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Proven experience in the development and operation of scientific computing platforms or research services.
- Hands-on experience with analysis facilities, distributed analysis environments, or interactive scientific workflows.
- Knowledge of large-scale data management, data lake architectures, or federated infrastructures.
- Experience integrating research data services, repositories, workflow platforms, or authentication and authorisation systems.
- Strong ability to collaborate technically with scientific communities or international research infrastructures.
- Proficiency in programming for scientific computing, especially Python, with familiarity in web technologies like JavaScript and React.
- Understanding of ICT system architecture, including designing, deploying, and operating distributed systems and cloud-native applications.
- Knowledge of operating systems, including containerisation and orchestration technologies like Kubernetes and Helm.
- Experience with data-intensive computing, data management, and federated data access.
- Familiarity with analysis platforms, workflow systems, or Virtual Research Environments.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with open science, FAIR data principles, research repositories, or EOSC-related services is advantageous.
- Experience in a coordinating role in distributed scientific communities focused on data analysis and management is beneficial.
- Experience with tools such as Rucio, REANA, CVMFS, JupyterLab, or Zenodo/InvenioRDM is a plus.
