Electronics Engineer (HSE-TS-IMS-2026-161-LD)

CERN seeks a Senior Electronics Engineer to design radiation and environmental monitoring hardware and firmware within the HSE Unit in Geneva.

This position sits within the TS-Group of the HSE Unit, which oversees occupational health and safety, radiation protection, environmental safeguards, and emergency readiness. The engineer will focus on creating and enhancing monitoring solutions, covering both the physical hardware and the embedded firmware that drives them.

Responsibilities

  • Design mixed-signal electronic circuits, with a specific focus on analogue sensor interfaces and ultra-low-current measurement systems.
  • Write and maintain embedded firmware in VHDL and C for system control, data processing, and hardware interaction.
  • Manage and consolidate heterogeneous firmware codebases along with their associated development environments.
  • Adapt MPSoC architectures to accommodate necessary communication interfaces and onboard processing capabilities.
  • Integrate firmware updates to satisfy functional and performance targets.
  • Conduct functional testing to confirm system behavior under standard operating conditions.
  • Build specialized electronic test boards and complex test benches to evaluate systems under radiation exposure.
  • Characterize new systems through measurement, analysis, and validation.
  • Troubleshoot testing issues, identify root causes, and apply corrective improvements.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and software teams to ensure smooth system integration.
  • Maintain documentation, version control, and traceability using GitLab and Jira.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent experience in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience in complex HDL firmware development for FPGAs, including data readout, processing, simulation, and timing constraints.
  • Proficiency in scripting and programming languages, especially C and Python.
  • Knowledge of digital design methodologies and verification flows, with ASIC development experience.
  • Practical understanding of GitLab CI/CD pipelines for build, test, and deployment automation.
  • Proven background in mixed-signal electronics design, including analogue and digital board development.
  • Experience in precision analogue front-end design and low-current measurement techniques.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English or French.

Nice to have

  • Experience with radiation monitoring tests and system characterization under pulsed radiation fields.
  • Ability to analyze test results, troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective improvements.
