Roche seeks a Senior Software Engineer in Basel to build scalable data pipelines and applications for its Computational Sciences Center of Excellence, leveraging AI and cloud technologies to support drug discovery.
The Solutions Engineering team within Roche's Data and Digital Center (DDC) develops modernized, interconnected computational ecosystems. As a Software Engineer, you will design and implement robust, reusable capabilities for the shared data platform, enabling scientists in preclinical and clinical research to deliver innovative medicines.
Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality data flows and pipelines across scientific domains to ensure technical excellence.
- Drive the adoption of open-source, cloud-first, API-first, and AI-first strategies in problem-solving.
- Enhance data workflows and application architecture by applying microservices and event-driven design patterns.
- Combine diverse datasets to support AI/ML models, natural language search, and analytics tools.
- Support the deployment of advanced AI models that utilize recent machine learning advancements.
- Collaborate with partners to shape technical decisions regarding data workflows and application development.
- Gain a thorough understanding of the data ecosystem to foster ongoing innovation and process improvements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience, along with at least two years of software engineering background.
- Hands-on full-stack development experience, including familiarity with frontend frameworks like React or Vue and backend technologies such as Python or Java.
- Proficiency in databases, data analytics (SQL/NoSQL, ETL/ELT), and API development (REST, GraphQL).
- Knowledge of software development lifecycle best practices, including version control, testing, observability, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with cloud-native architectures, preferably within AWS.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to think strategically to achieve long-term objectives.
- Demonstrated ownership of system design decisions from initial requirements through to production deployment.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Familiarity with agile software development methodologies.
- Experience using agentic coding tools to produce maintainable code.
