Principal / Senior Principal Software Engineer

Roche seeks a Principal/Senior Principal Software Engineer in Basel to lead the development of scalable data ecosystems and AI-driven solutions for scientific research.

The Computational Sciences Center of Excellence at Roche aims to leverage data and artificial intelligence to support scientists in drug discovery. This role focuses on building interconnected computational environments that accelerate research and enable the adoption of machine learning tools.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a scalable platform for capturing, processing, and preparing scientific data for analysis.
• Create user-friendly data applications and pipelines that combine various datasets across scientific fields.
• Apply microservices and event-driven architecture to optimize data workflows and application ecosystems.
• Ensure technical excellence by delivering innovative, best-in-class solutions that integrate seamlessly.
• Integrate diverse datasets to support AI, machine learning, and natural language search capabilities.
• Work closely with computational and research scientists to understand their needs and develop effective technology solutions.
• Provide technical leadership on ongoing projects and identify opportunities for building reusable solutions.
• Mentor junior developers to foster their professional growth and maintain high engineering standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience, with 8-10+ years in full-stack software and data engineering.
• Strong skills in backend development (Python, Java) and frontend development (React, Vue).
• Deep experience with modern data engineering, including databases (SQL/NoSQL), data engineering (ETL/ELT), and APIs (REST, GraphQL).
• Proven experience developing and deploying applications on cloud-native architectures, preferably AWS.
• Experience in setting up SDLC best practices for the team including versioning, testing, observability, CI/CD, etc.
• Exceptional abilities to architect scalable solutions in complex environment with multiple existing system integrations
• Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences

Nice to have

• Experience working in pharmaceutical or a related domain and in setting best-practices for agentic coding producing maintainable code
