Doctoral Position in Robust Railway Intervention Planning under Uncertainty

ETH Zurich seeks a researcher to develop uncertainty-aware optimization tools for robust railway intervention planning and resource forecasting in collaboration with SBB.

This role is embedded within the interdisciplinary ETH Mobility Initiative, conducted alongside SBB. The position aims to create quantitative support systems that enable fact-based decision-making for railway infrastructure management, specifically focusing on how to group or separate maintenance interventions under uncertain conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Designing robust optimization techniques to decide the timing, location, and grouping of railway interventions.
  • Analyzing and propagating uncertainties associated with planning interventions and forecasting resources.
  • Embedding analytical results into a geospatial decision-support framework that adheres to ISO 55001 standards and UIC best practices.
  • Validating the developed methods using historical and scheduled data from a pilot SBB corridor.
