Empa seeks a Senior Scientist/PostDoc to integrate CCUS processes into energy system models within the SWEET ACHIEVE consortium, focusing on the Rheintal case study.
This position sits within the Urban Energy Systems Laboratory (UESL), which creates strategies for decarbonized and resilient energy systems. The role is part of the SWEET ACHIEVE consortium, which targets hard-to-abate emissions to meet Switzerland's net-zero goals, and will lead the investigation of the 'Rheintal' case study based on the Netto-Null Rheintal Projekt.
Responsibilities
- Develop and analyze a sector-coupled energy system model alongside the ACHIEVE consortium and Rheintal project partners.
- Incorporate CCUS and industrial processes into energy system models.
- Evaluate the energy system against various metrics and optimization objectives, including cost and CO2 emissions.
- Coordinate developments with the project manager.
- Present results internally and externally.
Requirements
- PhD in mechanical or chemical engineering, or an equivalent qualification in a related field.
- Profound interdisciplinary knowledge of the ongoing energy transition.
- Specific expertise in optimization methods and energy system modeling.
- Experience in energy system modeling and optimization.
- Familiarity with optimization methods, such as Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP).
- A strong track record of relevant publications.
- Excellent English skills.
Nice to have
- Experience working with CCUS and industrial processes.
- Programming experience in Python and Pyomo.
