Research Scientist - Complex Systems Modelling for Reliability (f/m/d)

ABB Power Grids seeks a Senior Research Scientist in Baden-Daettwil to advance reliability modelling for complex power grid systems through innovative methodologies and interdisciplinary collaboration.

This position focuses on pioneering system-level reliability modelling and lifecycle optimization to enhance the performance and dependability of large-scale grid infrastructures and their components.

Responsibilities

• Translate novel concepts and advanced techniques into practical reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) modelling frameworks.
• Develop and apply methodologies like Reliability-Centered Maintenance and reliability twin concepts to support decision-making under uncertain conditions.
• Partner with a diverse, global team of researchers and engineers to pinpoint, refine, and resolve significant industrial challenges.
• Foster internal connections and actively exchange knowledge with both local and international external partners.
• Publish findings in scientific journals, file patent applications, and produce technical reports to share results with the broader community.

Requirements

• Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Reliability Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related discipline.
• Strong systems thinking ability to connect component-level physics with system-level performance, backed by deep expertise in system-level reliability modelling (RAMS, RBD, FTA, Monte Carlo, stochastic modelling).
• Hands-on experience with complex engineering systems in high-reliability sectors such as energy, aerospace, or automotive, including familiarity with maintenance strategies and lifecycle optimization for repairable systems.
• Demonstrated history of presenting at top scientific conferences and publishing in reputable journals.
• Fluent English communication skills.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of power grid technologies, including HVDC, substations, and converters.
