Electrification Business Area Research Manager

ABB seeks a Senior Electrification Business Area Research Manager to lead global research portfolios and technology roadmaps, reporting to the CTO. Based in Europe, this role drives innovation in electrical systems and power electronics.

The company is looking for a senior leader to define and manage a high-impact research portfolio focused on core electrification technologies. Reporting directly to the Electrification Chief Technology Officer, this global position (with a preference for European locations or major R&D sites) is responsible for aligning research activities with business line objectives and ensuring the successful execution of strategic technology roadmaps.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Business Lines and the CTO to establish strategic research directions and develop global technology roadmaps.
• Oversee the creation and management of a high-impact research project portfolio.
• Coordinate all global research activities to ensure alignment with business goals.
• Foster a culture of innovation by exploring emerging technologies across various industries and academic institutions.
• Facilitate partnerships between Corporate Research Centers and Business Lines to integrate business needs into strategic planning.
• Set project targets and monitor the execution of electrification research to meet performance goals.
• Ensure effective project planning, prioritization, and execution within Research Centers.
• Manage the transfer of technology and knowledge between Corporate Research Centers and internal stakeholders.
• Maintain relationships with the global research community, including universities and innovation partners.
• Support marketing and promotion activities related to research outcomes.
• Manage legal contracts for intellectual property and technology licensing.
• Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and resource allocation for research initiatives.
• Monitor progress against financial targets and take corrective actions as needed.
• Define and agree on resource and skills plans with local Corporate Research Centers.

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience in Research or R&D, preferably in electrical distribution or related industries.
• Master’s degree in an Engineering discipline.
• Strong familiarity with core electrification technologies, including electrical systems, power electronics, switching & protection, and intelligent systems.
• Proven ability to connect research outcomes to divisional strategic needs.
• Excellent communication skills and innovative thought leadership.
• Effective project portfolio management capabilities.

• PhD degree.
