The Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL seeks a Senior Scientist for ecological modelling to map species distributions under climate change scenarios for the SBS-M7 project.
This position supports the SBS-M7 project, part of the Swiss Biodiversity Strategy phase 2, which focuses on assessing climate change impacts on biodiversity. The role involves using the N-SDM modelling pipeline to predict how thousands of plant and animal species will be distributed across Switzerland under current and future climatic conditions.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with InfoFlora and InfoFauna to gather and prepare species data for modelling purposes.
- Generate spatial distribution predictions for numerous plant and animal species throughout Switzerland.
- Refine the modelling pipeline in coordination with consortium experts and feedback from biological specialists.
- Calculate relevant ecological indicators based on the generated distribution maps.
- Evaluate the possibility of projecting the Swiss Habitat Map into future climate scenarios using species distribution data.
Requirements
- Possess a PhD in ecology or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrate strong expertise in macroecology, statistical ecology, spatial modelling, and handling large ecological datasets.
- Be proficient in coding using R, Python, and GIT.
- Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Show curiosity, independence, and strong teamwork skills, valuing collaborative efforts.
- Ability to formulate and pursue new ideas autonomously.

- Specialized knowledge in species distribution modelling, particularly with the N-SDM pipeline.
