The Eidg. Forschungsanstalt WSL seeks a Scientific Assistant in Tree-Ring Ecology for a one-year fixed-term role in Birmensdorf. The position supports the OptFORESTS EU project through dendrochronological analysis and field work.
This position belongs to the Research Group Dendrosciences, which employs tree rings to study how environmental factors influence tree growth and to reconstruct historical climate conditions. The role is integral to the EU project OptFORESTS, which addresses forest genetic resources, climate change impacts, and natural hazards. The appointment is for a fixed term of one year.
Responsibilities
- Process and analyze tree-ring width and density measurements obtained from common garden experiments throughout Europe.
- Perform additional quantitative analyses related to wood properties as required by the project.
- Assist with field campaigns, including sample collection and the upkeep of common garden trials.
- Prepare, validate, and manage datasets and associated project activities.
- Collaborate with fellow scientists to conduct exploratory data analysis and create visualizations.
Requirements
- Hold a recently completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Forest Ecology, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrate experience or a strong interest in dendrochronology, tree-ring analysis, or wood anatomy.
- Work in a careful, structured, and independent manner.
- Exhibit strong teamwork capabilities.
- Be willing to participate in both laboratory and field work, as well as data processing tasks.
Nice to have
- Proficiency with data analysis software such as R or Python.
- Understanding of forest genetics.
- Strong written and spoken English skills.
