Scientist in AI-Driven Power Electronics (f/m/d)

ABB Power Grids seeks a Senior Scientist in AI-Driven Power Electronics in Baden-Daettwil, Switzerland, to lead research integrating machine learning into power grid applications.

This position is based at the Research Center in Baden, Switzerland, and focuses on advancing power electronics through artificial intelligence. The scientist will develop innovative solutions for high-voltage direct current (HVDC), energy storage, and renewable energy systems, driving technical progress in these rapidly expanding sectors.

Responsibilities

• Integrate AI and machine learning techniques to enhance the modeling, design, and optimization of power electronics.
• Conduct industrial research on multi-physics modeling and optimization to build advanced engineering tools for power grid applications.
• Work with global, interdisciplinary teams of researchers and engineers to identify and resolve significant industrial challenges.
• Foster internal relationships and collaborate with external partners, including universities and vendors, to share expertise.
• Publish findings in scientific journals, file patent applications, and produce technical reports.

Requirements

• A PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Electronics, or a PhD in Computer Science specializing in AI.
• Strong background in AI and machine learning, including proficiency in Python and relevant software frameworks.
• Demonstrated ability to apply AI/ML methods to engineering problems, specifically within power electronics.
• Practical experience in the design and modeling of power electronic systems.
• Fluent English communication skills.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of power electronics integration aspects such as cooling, mechanical integration, insulation, EMC, and grid integration.
