PhD position in Biohybrid Robotics at ETH Zurich, focusing on muscle-driven robots and biofabrication techniques. The role involves designing, fabricating, and testing biohybrid systems using advanced bioprinting and tissue engineering methods.
The doctoral candidate will join an interdisciplinary team at the intersection of tissue engineering, biofabrication, robotics, and control, contributing to the development of biohybrid systems that integrate living muscle tissues with robotic components.
Responsibilities
- Design, fabricate, and characterize robots powered by engineered muscle tissues
- Create muscle constructs using hydrogel casting, micro-molding, and bioprinting techniques based on light and extrusion
- Activate muscle tissues through electrical stimulation
- Track and analyze robot motion using motion-tracking systems
- Work on scaling up engineered muscle tissue production
- Control the formation and maturation of myofibers during fabrication
- Investigate tissue architectures ranging from biomimetic to biosynthetic designs
- Integrate proprioceptive feedback into muscle-based actuators
- Identify sustainable materials for use in biohybrid systems
Requirements
- Strong academic background in bioengineering, robotics, tissue engineering, or a related field
- Highly motivated, self-driven, and able to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team
- Dedicated to rigorous scientific research with the ability to publish in high-impact journals
