ETH Zurich seeks a PhD candidate for a position in computer vision applied to natural hazards, focusing on debris flow analysis. The role involves developing algorithms for processing field data and contributing to research and teaching in engineering geology.

The Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich is advancing research on debris flow motion by analyzing extensive field datasets, including timelapse point clouds and video imagery. A foundational dataset has already been collected, enabling new insights into flow dynamics and driving mechanisms through high-resolution displacement and velocity estimates.

Responsibilities

  • Create advanced algorithms for processing field data, especially in optical flow and object detection
  • Analyze results to enhance understanding of debris flow mechanisms
  • Assist in maintaining and operating monitoring systems
  • Develop independent research ideas and pursue third-party funding opportunities
  • Participate in teaching activities within the Engineering Geology group

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Vision, Data Science, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Remote Sensing, Engineering Geology, or a related field
  • Proven experience and interest in machine learning and computer vision, particularly object tracking, optical flow, and sensor fusion
  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills

Nice to have

  • Background in rock mechanics, soil mechanics, or landslide processes
  • Previous experience with point cloud processing
  • Ability to work independently
