PhD Position in Vehicle Sensor and Remote Sensing Analysis for Road Safety

PhD position at ETH Zurich in vehicle sensor and remote sensing analysis for urban road safety, within a Horizon Europe project. Full-time, onsite role requiring research background in machine learning and sensor data, with opportunities in multidisciplinary research and real-world pilot testing.

This PhD position is based in the Chair of Infrastructure Management at ETH Zurich, under Professor T. Adey, and focuses on using vehicle sensors, remote sensing, and machine learning to improve urban road safety. It is part of a broader EU Horizon project aiming to support safe active mobility through research and innovation.

Responsibilities

• Use vehicle sensors, remote sensing, and machine learning techniques to analyze urban road safety.
• Help analyze safety-critical events using data from multiple sources and explainable AI methods.
• Support the creation of standardized assessment methods, predictive models, and validated safety indicators.
• Take part in large-scale pilot studies in four European cities to test methods in real traffic conditions.

Requirements

• A research background appropriate for studying vehicle sensors, remote sensing, and machine learning in the context of road safety.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-frequency on-board vehicle sensors and computer-vision imagery is advantageous.
